thanks - that's what I just figured out I was going the other way assuming that they were working in 29.97 and interpreting the footage as something like 37.4 which made no sense - then my boss mentioned well what if they assumed it was 23.976 (actually it looks like they assumed it was 24 FPS) and worked at that frame rate - and that's what it looks like they did.

so thanks - we'll know better next time and mention the frame rate we are working in.

8:14 to 10:17 is a 5:4 ratio, which is the same ratio as 29.97:23.976. Probably not a coincidence.

I've tried playing in DaVinci but I'm by no means an expert. Its supposed to be fairly smart at render, but i wouldn't be surprised if the timeline was set up for the wrong frame rate at the outset... perhaps DaVinci defaults to frame rate conversion at render.

ok a bit more weirdness on the files that  29.9625 FPS - I'm looking at the files we send and the files we received back, for example one of the files we sent was 8:14 @ 29.97 and it came back as 10:17 @ 29.9625. They only had the footage we gave them and they were color correcting on a software DaVinci. My only thought is they ingested the footage as some funky frame rate and then exported it at something close to 29.97. Does this even sound plausible to anyone who uses a DaVinci? any other ideas - just trying to track this down so that it doesn't happen again, don't want to go into this fight with a little more knowledge.
