This is exactly how I ended up making DCP’s J. I’ve actually become friends with Terrence over the past couple of year who codes OpenDCP. OpenDCP is a good tool and would be a good tool even if he charged a few hundred dollars for it. But as with any powerful tool, if you don’t’ use it correctly, your DCP will not ingest or play.
However, if you plan on creating a DCP yourself, you need to research DCI compliance and specs well – as well has have a DCI DCP system available for testing. Your 2K comp is not DCI compliant and won’t play. For best playback results, you need to stay with Flat and Scope aspect ratios. Scaling 1080p will cause softness on decent sized screens unless you have access to hardware scaling (like GPU scaling in Premiere Pro). Non-proportional scaling, unless a desired aesthetic, will play back that way in the theater. Non-proportional scaling will of course crop – so you either have to rely on safe zone, pan and scan or leaving pillarboxes for 1080p. 16:9 and Full aspect ratios have intermittent support, especially in theater masking.
And be sure to read up on frame rates, correct audio processing (OpenDCP can’t filter out incorrectly formatted audio which will cause a failure at ingest time), drive formatting and CPL?/Packling list checklist (file lengths etc.) to be sure your DCP will work on all systems.
I’m sure you will have more questions. OpenDCP has a mailing list and forum for questions.
Good luck,

Subject: [AE] OpenDCP
hi All.
I'm working on a 1080p ProRes4444 project and we are planning on creating a DCP from it with the OpenDCP software (http://code.google.com/p/opendcp/)
I've created a 2K comp, 2048x1556 px, pixel aspect Square, Frame aspect 512:389 (1,32).
And have dropped the 1080p in there. Now I have to scale it up.
My question is, should I just scale it to width and height, making it non-proportional?
Nice thing is that the OpenDCP seems to be DCI compliant, anyone have any knowledge to share about the OpenDCP?
thx !
Met vriendelijke groet/kind regards,
