Solved!
For anyone who might run into this in the future: The 6pin to 8pin adapter is totally unnecessary and was causing the problem. Just plugged the 6pin cable right into the 8pin socket leaving the two spots on the left empty, and voila! It all works just fine.

Not the doesn't show the startup screen issue, but it just goes click and shuts off without even getting to the startup chime. You have to pull the power cord to reset it. If the card is in at the same time as my 5770 and no power plugged into the 570 card, the computer starts and runs just fine. Makes me suspect that it's a power issue, no? Any idea how to diagnose and cure this power connection?

I only had the one cable from my HD5770, so I had to search all over to get another miniPCIe power cable. Not easy to find. I have one of these connected to a 6pin to 8pin adapter cable, the other is just the same old 6pin cable that was there on my 5770. How can I tell if the power cable is feeding the right wires to the right pins? Any dangers before I start pulling cables apart and rewiring them?
