Scott,

I would agree here..  I don't think I'll ever intend on using the raytracing 3d renderer stuff in AE.. it's just not necessary for what I do, and I can easily create much more elaborate renders with Global Illumination and Ambient Occlusion, etc, in my 3d program in a short matter of render time.

This Element plugin, which I had been anticipating since the teaser (which seemed like it came out last year) is definitely more along the lines of a robust, design driven, feature for my use.  The ray-traced extrudes currently in AE don't feel like they were made for designers.. they feel like they were made for technical achievement and as a stepping stone into the field of true 3d...

Element may have some hidden "don'ts" that we don't know about yet.. of course the marketing video is going to show off the best stuff.  I really like Andrew's other plugins he's developed though. Optical flares is such a nice alternative for flare usage.. and the side-leaks and things you can do with it that are subtle, really allow me to DESIGN, instead of just EXPERIMENT.. I think Element will do the same once I wrap my head around how it all works..

I wonder how the Element layer works with other layers that aren't element layers?  2.5D involved with it?  how about blending options? Apply an effect to a precomped Element layer? These may all be technically problematic, but we'll have to see..

I for one am actually very excited about this plugin, and this is the first time I'm lining up my funds to purchase a plugin on release day.

After a week of research, I decided on a Geforce 5xx card instead of an ATI radeon 7970, because the ATI doesn't support CS6 raytracing. But, (forgive me if this sounds brash), this Element plugin seems to be way more powerful and flexible than the built-in CS6 extrude feature. Wouldn't it make more sense to buy hardware that supports this plugin instead?
