I usually use the digieffects plugz in damage for those things…
much quicker.

and then re-import.

If I'm forced to keep working in HD resolution, I'll  use a variety of combinations of blur, mosaic and noises,  
plus I'll sometimes throw in Turbulent Displacement in between them,  set to a very small displacement which can grunge things up a fair amount
