I don't see anything wrong with creating a separate partition, and experimenting with non-critical work. But Apple's history with OSs is that their dot-ohs are rife with bugs and incompatibilities. My general rule is to wait for 10.x.4 or the "all clear" is sounded by colleagues such as here before trying it with paying jobs.
Also, worth considering is that you may have hardware that requires third-party drivers. If the drivers aren't ready and supported, you may be just asking for trouble.
