i know you mentioned "no software" but i had to mention Max/MSP/J= itter from Cycling 74 - Jitter being it's video aspect - and that it wo= uld be relatively easy to create a standalone app that would do this. Jitte= r is used quite a bit for video installations of a wide variety of confiura= tions.
