Yeah, for this application I kept the default radius of .5. It was slow but manageable, just a few seconds per frame. I made sure to prerender and proxy the comp as soon as I got that element locked in. It seems like Trapcode or someone else would do well to implement Form style controls over Hex grids in addition to square.
