Glad you worked it out. I'd be curious to know if it's the same on a Mac. I don't have 6 yet or I'd try it. But I do import project files often and the import process shouldn't have been "improved," if it causes extra steps, confusion, wasting time . . .

Ok.. I think I figured it out..
Previously, AE would just change all the settings to what was
needed when I chose the AEP file in the import dialogue. I didn't
have to touch a thing, and it just knew it should be imported as a
project.
This doesn't seem to be happening.
Basically the "Files of type:" drop down was set to "All
Acceptable Files" and when I chose the AEP file the "Format:"
field would show "Adobe Dynamic Link" and the "Import as:" drop
down only had "Footage" as it's choice.
If I go and change the "Files of type:" to " All Files (*.*)" I
can then change the "Format:" to "After Effects Project" and
"Import as:" to "Project"
Similarly, if I change the "Files of type:" to "After Effects
Project (*.aep, *.aepx)" The format will change automatically to
"After Effects Project"..
It's just that it's not doing this automatically anymore, and for
some reason, when "All Acceptable Files" is chosen, it sees an AEP
as an Adobe Dynamic Link format, and chooses to try to import it
as footage through Adobe Dynamic Link, instead of as a Project..
I'll submit a bug report to get this behavior back to the way it
was in previous versions.. Has anyone else had issue with this?
Can someone else confirm it does the same thing for them? (might
be a Windows only issue) Basically just try to import one AEP
into another, and see if it defaults to Project, or if it thinks
it's Adobe Dynamic Link content, and errors out?
Thanks,

Sounds like a bug.
Can you import the file in AE 5.5? If so, can you take the
current comp, save as 5.5, get what you need, then open again in
6? Or maybe stay in 5.5?

Hey everyone. I'm hoping I'm
just overlooking something, but here's my situation.
I'm in a second project file that I'm working on for a
client, This project is related to a previous one, but
they are different, so I have different project files for
each. I need to import the previous project and grab some
comps I made in there, out of it. Some static design
comps and illustrations using shape-layers that I don't
have as external files anywhere.
So I go to Import>File and choose the AEP file I need
to bring in. I do this sometimes, and normally, I'll just
scrap the other comps I don't need and just grab out what
I do.
So first off, in the "import as:" drop-down box of the
import dialog, I only have the option of "Footage". In
CS5, it used to change to "Project" but I don't have that
option here.
When I try to import the AEP file, I get the following
error message...
After Effects error: Failed to connect to Adobe Premiere
Pro Dynamic Link. ( 86 :: 1 )
I have not installed Premiere Pro, as I don't really have
a use for it in my current workflow. I'm using Creative
Cloud on Windows 7 Pro SP1 All Adobe apps I have
installed are updated to the latest. (Ae, Ps, Ai, Au)
Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to have Premiere Pro
installed just to be able to import an AE project into
another project?
Not sure what to do at this point, and I need those comps.
Both files are AE CS6 compliant (the older one was a CS5
file that I opened, and saved out to CS6) No release
specific or legacy plugins were used, so the original
project is just a native CS6 project now.
Hope someone can help me out here. Thanks in advance,

really simple here that i have
wanted in AME all these years?
Are you seeing "match source"
as an option for all quicktime
codecs when entering the "export
settings" dialog box?
Is there really a difference in
the win and mac versions of AME?
I use FFMPEG and "Another GUI" as a
frontend to generate Prores files,
and it seems to work ok, no FCP user
i have delivered to has complained
yet :-)
It doesn't make Prores output
possible through any regular
programs you have to do this extra
step to convert the files, maybe
Adobe could include FFMPEG as an
encoder engine in AME someday :-)
Only problem with this
workflow is i can't get ffmpeg
to encode excact colors in the
Prores if my input file is a YUV
file, it only seems to work 100%
correct with RGB encoded input
files, but maybe there is some
obscure ffmpeg setting that i
can't figure out how to use.

user who doesn't know this small

That
you're on Windows may
explain it.
I have read of a
method to encode to
ProRes on Windows,
but it requires a
third-party app, and
some hoop-jumping,
IIRC. So, I presume
even with this
software installed,
you wouldn't see
ProRes as an export
option in AME, Ae or
Pr.
What about AVI?
Isn't that
available as a Match
Source option?
I just tried Avid
Meridian Compressed,
as an experiment, as
a Preview option,
and Match Settings
works for Export
there, too.
I'm on Mac, BTW.

Robert,
I use ProRes
as a Preview
format, and
Match Source
Attributes is
available to
me.
Byron, to
your OP, once
you change
anything,
you're not
matching
source
attributes any
longer. So,
there's your
answer.
It's easy
to make
presets. Just
pick an export
format that
contains the
codec you
want, modify
anything else,
and save it.
Presets
sort
alphanumerically,
so that's
something I
keep in mind
when naming
them. Putting
the most used
ones at the
top saves a
bit of time.
Consistent
naming methods
keep
everything
grouped
nicely, and
minimize my
searching for
the one I
want.

could use a

Mbps, some has

don't.
And
the

replaced with
a effectpreset

so you could
add different

adjust volume,
apply a LUT,
timecode
burnin, etc...

Sorry for the
OT, I haven't
been able to
find an answer
to this and
usually assume
if this list
doesn't know,
it's the end
of the road.
;-)
Some of
the presets in
Adobe Media
Encoder(CS6
here) have
"Match Source
Attributes"
for the size,
frame rate,
etc.. I would
like to make
some presets
that convert
footage to
other formats
without
changing the
size and frame
rate. I see no
way to set
values to
"Match
Source" when
making a
preset. Looks
like I would
have to create
presets for
every size I
might run
into. Has
anyone found a
good
workaround for
this?
Thanks,
Byron
