My experience is that the real problem is not the viewers, it's the distribution channels and cable stations who will reject or refuse your work if text is outside of center cut safe.

Yes, I typically have to finish everything for center-cut title safe, even if it's being done HD.  It's pretty standard for us to work that way unless it is explicitly stated that something will be letterboxed for an SD finish.  The worst is when you work for center-cut, then the footage ends up getting letterboxed for SD anyway so all of your supers are teeny-tiny :-(

Hope this helps!

Looked around the googles but couldn't really find a definitive answer. We've upgraded our station to HD, but it is downconverted to SD before being fibered to our parent station. They are building a new HD facility, so for now we have to do everything 4x3 safe.  Do we really have to worry about safe title on the sides?  Forget the six people who still have CRT's at home. Is anything cut off at home when a 4x3 signal is displayed on a 16x9 monitor?

Thanks,
