AE uses CUDA for the raytrace engine, viewport display, and a lot of new plugins are taking advantage of it. But it is also very useful for premiere pro and other video encoding as well. But I agree she doesn't need a $750 690 for editing. Nobody does; it's a gaming card.

She's a prosumer, and based on her past posts I have a hunch she is not trying to push 8 streams of 5K r3d media through Premiere. Dual GPU cards in the past have had bad price:performance, as well as being noisy power hogs. Does that extra $750 include a sturdy enough PSU to run the thing? I have 2 580's in my rig at home and the thing sounds like a wind turbine! Also, please correct me if I'm wrong as we're not on CS6 yet, but isn't the only part of AE that uses CUDA the 3d raytrace renderer? I think Genarts plugins might take advantage too, but again I'm guessing that's not an issue here.

Brian what are you basing that opinion on? I agree but for a different reason. The gtx 580 or 590 has almost double the CUDA power (not cores) as the 680 or 690, and more than triple the 670. It is a very significant upgrade to CUDA and the 3D raytracing engine I have experienced first hand. nVidia gimped the CUDA performance on the kepler gpus. This has been shown on multiple benchmarks. Also the gtx 580 is cheaper than a new 680. I'd highly recommend the 3GB 580 or the 6GB 590. a lot of bang for the buck

I am in the process of buying a new workstation and I am wondering if I should add the $750 cost to upgrade from a Nvidia GTX 670 to the GTX 690.
I am a prosumer who works primarily with After Effects, Premiere Pro and Photoshop.
Also am wondering since Windows 8 is due to be launched soon if I should wait so that I will have a turnkey system.
Thank
you very much. I enjoy this list immensely and appreciate the knowledge that I obtain from it.
