Clever grading and some other tricks.. really depended on the content.

Pro Res 422 (HQ) worked just fine for us
Tons of 3D motion graphics. Started with the Raytracer in CS6 but that did not work out well for what we had to do in the time we had to do it. So we used our stuff instead.
All assets then went to Premiere Pro for editing and then to AME
Tweaked AME Broadcast Mpeg 2 High Quality preset to suit the target system
And voila... a happy client.
We did encounter some very interesting Errors along the way - filed some as bugs already and will file some more when I get a chance.
Some of the bugs we filed should make it to the next incarnation of AE as fixes (whatever form that takes).
Oh, mostly Macs. The Canadiens graphics team are all on Macs, at Mettle we run both platforms.
I had them swap all of their GPU’s to NVIDIA and quite a few AE plug-in vendors received orders because of this project.
All in all CS6 was a good experience for this project.
Cheers,

Now I am curious :-)
How did you prepare your footage before up-rezing?
Did you move to to an intermediate intra-frame codec? did you work in a 16-bit or 32-bit AE-project?
Thanks,

Oh I should add that part of the challenge was that we were stuck using mpeg2 for playback so the up-rezing had to be as clean as possible so that it survived compression for mpeg2 well.
