If i have the budget for a k5000 id probably spend it on a Cubix box and a some GTX580s.

No, just looking at the side benefit for AE. I want the performance for Resolve. I thought some others might be interested to know about this card as currently there are very few cards approved for Mac out of the NVIDIA line. I sometimes need full resolution 4K frames out of Resolve and the GPU exhausts. For most things, HD and 2K a GTX 285 can handle real time but not 4K.

Im pretty sure the K5000 will be overkill if you are just looking for speeding up after effects renders. For $2500 you can get a lot more performance or save some cash

you should see decent soft shadows and blur around 6 or so.
DoF renders a bit differently in raytrace comps than they do in classic 3d and of course DoF is an expensive operation in 3D.

also it sounds like you dont have an NVidia card with CUDA. with a decent card what you are trying should render relatively fast.

without one it would be painful and i wouldnt recommend trying :)

I must be doing something wrong. I have a line of text that is extruded and raised up off a solid used as the floor. I have two lights on it and I have the objects reflecting off each other. If I turn depth of field on the camera, I have to crank the ray tracing quality up to 15 to get a smooth blur and shadows if the DOF is shallow. I tried this last night before I left work and after 14 hours of rendering to a jpeg sequence, it had only done 55 frames.  While I don't mind reliving AE from the mid nineties, I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks,
