the 580 (1.5 or 3gb) is a much better card than the 570. In fact it is the fastest consumer CUDA card available (aside from the 590 which is 2x 580s in one) It may have had something to do with the power draw though, the 580 is definitely a PSU power guzzler.

Yes, we have the 4000 in one of our machines now and we were disappointed in the performance. We expected much better from it. As it turns out this suite is used for conforming shows so it is not as mission critical. Moving forward we want the best performance for the rooms where we need performance. I know I asked the engineers at Davinci about the 570's in the past and it was not recommended for our set-up. That was a long time ago so I can't remember why. Anyway, we will test the new and available soon.
i swapped my q4000 for the gtx570. Much better performance. you could probably get 2 GTX570s and an GPU power supply for the price of a new Q4000 if you have room in your macpro That setup would be around 4x faster
My personal experience is that even with a Quadro 4000 for Mac, raytrace rendering in Ae is unusably slow. YMMV.
I bought the card for Pr, where it kicks some serious ass.
