I do this a lot to generate z= -depth maps from standard 3D comps, it's also pretty fast. You can do a very similar thing to create fog, but use the tint effect be= cause it has a blend-with-original option. You set the fog colour for bo= th black and white colours, then adjust the 'blend with original' value b= ased on the distance from camera. I'm actually working on a tutorial called "think like a compositor" which= shows how you can approach motion graphics projects in the same way a 3D= artist would approach a project in a 3D program, to give you more flexib= ility in the final 'look' in After Effects. I demonstrate how to create = simple z-depth maps inside After Effects. I'll let you know when it's do= ne, but will be a few weeks away yet. -Chris -----Original Message----- From: Nathan Shipley [mailto:nshipley@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 10:18 AM To: 'After Effects Mail List' Subject: Re: [AE] CS6 new 3D I wonder if there's any way to create a depth map and blur as a post process for those without acceptable video cards? (Or cobble one togethe= r with some environment fog or something.) Not nearly as expensive as true= 3D DoF, and usually fine. I think I've only rendered a few shots from Ma= ya in the last 4 years where I've actually needed to use true 3D DoF. Frischluft Depth Of Field in AE and a depth pass is often nice. (zBlur in Nuke is even better -- looks great, easy to dial in, and fast. = I think it's one of the few post-process DoF plugins I've seen that doesn't= have major problems with objects overlapping at different depths. But I digress...) Seems like a moot point if you've got a good video card, but just a thoug= ht for those without. I still haven't gotten into 3D in After Effects so I'= m not sure if what I'm suggesting is possible or feasible. A thought, though... - Nathan On Tue, Sep 11, 2012 at 6:56 PM, Chris Zwar wrote: > No, I'd be insane to attempt doing a proper commercial project that way= . > > This was just a bit of experimentation on my home machine.
