If y= ou have a wall that is perpendicular to the camera going back I depth it wou= ldn't show any depth via tint I haven't had a chance to try the following but if you place a light at the c= ams position and use the falloff to create the gradation I imagine you shoul= d be able to get a more convincing depth matte. All your objects i course wo= uld need to be set to white. No reflections etc erc.
