The only issue with using tint is when objects aren't facing the camera. If you have a wall that is perpendicular to the camera going back I depth it wouldn't show any depth via tint
I haven't had a chance to try the following but if you place a light at the cams position and use the falloff to create the gradation I imagine you should be able to get a more convincing depth matte. All your objects i course would need to be set to white. No reflections etc erc. And also need to minimize any antialiasing since that is detrimental to a proper depth matte
