I'm actually = working on a tutorial called "think like a compositor" which shows how = you can approach motion graphics projects in the same way a 3D artist = would approach a project in a 3D program, to give you more flexibility = in the final 'look' in After Effects.  I demonstrate how to create = simple z-depth maps inside After Effects.  I'll let you know when = it's done, but will be a few weeks away = yet.
