Like Jim said, just make sure the RAM modules are all the same type and compatible with your Mac Pro version. OWC should be able to confirm that for you.

Also wondering if I can put an SSD in the one empty drive slot I have.  I could make that my start up drive.  Would that not help performance as well?

I've got the early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1, and I replaced the two optical drive slots with 2 x 240GB SSD drives. That allowed me to create an 8TB RAID-0 internal array with 4 drives. Working great, no complain :-)
