I think the motherboard may cause issue no matter what, because it is filled with multiple chipsets and buses and such which all would change at once. I also think win7 tamed the "for your protection" thing, to everything BUT the motherboard, because at that point, it figures you probably have a new computer you are dealing with, and not just a "common" upgrade. Better safe than sorry.
