I think that AME uses profile 5 by default so one has to go in the
settings and change to 4.1 for the ipad to recognize the vid.

I forwarded this message to one of my coworkers who works on the AME presets for iPad. Here's what he said:



"Evan is not wrong that an iPad may fail to recognize an H.264 stream encoded at Level 5.

However, if Evan is referring specifically to AME's iPad presets, his advice is incorrect: it is not necessary to change the level. The AME presets are built to Apple's specifications and use Level 3.0 or 4.0, depending on the target resolution.

If Evan is not referring to the iPad presets and is simply advising that AME could set the level on H.264 output to 5, then that's true but the behavior is conditional. AME will load the last preset used when adding new output items, or when switching formats will load the preset for that format which most closely matches the source footage. It's very possible Evan is putting himself in a situation where AME automatically loads an
H.264 preset that uses Level 5 (though worth noting that AME does not come with any such presets; the highest it goes is 4.2; he may have created such a preset himself).

Regardless, users can assume that the iPad presets in AME CS6 are safe to use for those devices; we designed them to Apple specs and tested the output on the devices ourselves. They may wish to tweak the bitrate if they want to save space or increase quality (our bitrate choices are slightly conservative; Apple did not provide bitrate guidance). Also a reminder that there are additional presets for iPad and other tablets available for download from Adobe.com."
