I'm not sure how using a null is going to prevent the gimbal lock. The layer just has a few keyframes on it. I tried copying the keyframes over to a null and it is twisting as well. Maybe it just can't handle keeping the roll intact when traveling in Y.

I too always use nulls for controlling 3D camera – it’s just not reliable without nulls especially auto-orient layers.
