I think I remember rotating the null 90 degrees on, say, X. Then parenting the layer to the null and doing an auto orient on the null. It was years ago though so I'm not sure exactly how I fixed the problem.

I found if I nudge one of the keyframes just a tad in X, the flipping goes away. It seems that if I have two keyframes with only a difference in Y (on a 3d layer) I get flipping.

I'm not sure how using a null is going to prevent the gimbal lock. The layer just has a few keyframes on it. I tried copying the keyframes over to a null and it is twisting as well. Maybe it just can't handle keeping the roll intact when traveling in Y.

Byron,

I too always use nulls for controlling 3D camera – it’s just not reliable without nulls especially auto-orient layers.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.
