Thanks all for the feedback. There's actually a few Maya scripts that
will do the baking for you, handy if you have lots of objects you want
to import. I used this one:

Some of the scripts will scale your Maya scene before baking, but I
much prefer Nathan's parent to null trick. It lets you scale the Maya
scene to AE units that make sense for what you're doing with
flexibility. I unparented the nulls and camera from the null after the
scale but kept it around so I knew the value I scaled up to, in case I
modified the Maya scene and wanted to reimport objects or cameras.
