If you've only got a few computers, can render to a network share or folder accessible to each machine, and don't mind going to an image sequence and then creating a Quicktime, AE's built-in multi-machine rendering is another option. Each machine just checks the output folder to see which images have already been rendered and then renders the next frame.
If the project assets are stored on the network where each machine can see them, there's no need to collect the project.
Just render to an image sequence format and check "Skip Existing Frames" in the render settings. You'd open the same project in AE on each machine with the comp queued up and just hit render.
In older versions of AE having multi-processing turned on was counter-productive -- slower for some reason.
Pretty rare that we have something that renders slow enough per frame to need to do this, but it's a nice option. It's kind of doing manually what render management software does automatically, but I've needed it so sporadically that it's been good enough.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
I’ve got a few different ideas now which I just need to try out.

After selecting 'collect files' you should just be able to select "None (project only)" in the drop down menu of the dialog box that comes up. That option only sends a copy of the .aep to the watch folder. As long as the file paths in the .aep are recognizable by the farm computers, no problem.
With a project with lots of source files, it still takes a long time just to get to that dialog box - guess it's checking to make sure everything's still there.

The problem I have is that for a particular project the source files are in the 10s of GB & copying them every time I want to submit a network job is madness.
Do I understand the process correctly? Is there a way of submitting jobs without collecting all the source files?
Does anyone use an alternative method (maybe using a commercial solution?) to network render in AE?
