I've been using AE since version 2 (still have my COSA dongle around here, somewhere), and one of the traps of being a long time user is that you sometimes catch yourself using new tools in old ways. I consider myself a fairly advanced AE user, but inevitably discover new, more efficient ways of doing even the most basic things through their books and videos. It's the old, "I didn't even know that feature was in there!" thing.
