Ah that trick only works to replace a single source element. So say you used the same video clip 12 times in a comp, with different effects on each layer, you could swap out that single item of footage to multiple layers. but it wont go from multiple source layers to multiple comps layers - it would need to know which items get replaced in which order. afaik there is no way to replace all the elements at once with different source items natively. I'm guessing there's probably a script for it... I'd poke around aescripts. I seem to remember something like that

thanx for the input, but unless I'm missing something, I tried it and its not working for me. I selected 12 layers in the TL. Then I select 12 footage items from project panel. I Alt&drag from project on to TL but instead of replacing TL items as happens when just one is selected, it places the new ones on top...
Any hint?
thanx again

This may not be exactly what you need, but if you ctrl-select the layers you want to change, then alt-drag a new source layer from the project panel, it will keep all keys and effects while swapping source footage.
