I also find it inconvenient that names get incremented when duping layers or comps.
Oooooh I love this. I often use expressions that look at the last number in the composition name, usually to automate some rather dull process. I rely on the fact that when I duplicate a composition, After Effects increments any number at the end. Setting up some projects with expressions driven by the composition number means that I can output a new version simply by duplicating a comp.
One example is supers - if I have a long list of text supers (for example, names) then I can simply copy & paste all of the text into a precomp (which is very quick), then use that in a main composition with an expression driven by the last number of the name. Doesn't matter if I have 10, 100, or 1000 individual versions to output, all I have to do is duplicate the composition and everything updates automatically. I can do this in seconds, rather than minutes. Huge time saver, and more importantly, a sanity-saver.
Please don't change this!
