Chris reminded me of this. if you didn't know about it, it has been a godsend to me, as I like to do audio work, track looping, and sound effects in AE sometimes.

Basically it's an effect preset you apply to your footage that has audio. You then use a slider in the effects panel to control volume. 0-100 is actually silent to file normal, then you can go higher if you wish. It's percentage based instead of Db based.

Cross fades work perfectly now. And as far as I can tell, audio scrubbing and ram previews in the timeline are now representative of final output.
