Fantastic. Thanks so much Jorge. I had created an empty mask, but it seems the extra step of actually putting data in it (ie; actually creating a mask with vectors) is what finally worked for me.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Just tried it, and it does work... Not in 3d, though:
1. Select and copy the position keyframes from your motion layer
2. Create/type your text (if you haven't created it yet)
3. With your text layer selected, create a mask (double-click on your rectangle tool, click with the pen tool, however you want to create your mask)
4. Twirl the newly created mask on your text layer and click on mask path to select it, and then paste... You should have your motion path as a mask.
5. Twirl the text heading on your type layer and then twirl the path options. Then select your newly created mask on the path drop-down menu.
6. Adjust how you want to adjust the text to the path. (Probably You'll want to move/match the mask on your text layer to the motion path first)

Hope it works for you,

I think you have to create your mask (any mask), then copy the position keyframes from your motion; and finally paste them in your highlighted mask path. I'm not in front of we right now, but that's what I would try doing. Hope I'm explaining myself

I have searched the Googlesphere and there are plenty of tutorials showing how to go the other way (mask to motion) but I cant seem to find a way to generate a mask from a motion path.

I'm trying to create a text path that follows another objects animated position.

Tried copy paste into a new empty mask, but no go. Can it be done?
