5XX are getting harder to find
they use more power than the 6XX but also may be a bit faster depending on what you are doing

AE currently uses up to 2GB per card of VRAM but i hope that goes up in the future.
i would get a card with at leasdt 2GB of VRAM. I got the 2.5GB 570GTX a few months back...

That would work for me-Thanks again. I'll look for a vendor of the 680 and see what the differences are between that and the 580. But the 580 would be a great improvement.

Ah, thank you.
So if I use my existing card for the monitor and the 570 or 680 for Cuda only (headless?), I'm cool then. Do I understand you right?

macvidcards mods the cards so you have a proper boot screen.
my card isnt connected to a monitor, just using it for CUDA, so theres no need if you are running headless.

many people dont care, but if you want you can also send them your card to be modded

10.7.4 you have to install the nvidia driver for the quadro4000.
in 10.8 i dont think you have to install anything

Thanks so much for your reply!
Do you know if the 680 needs to be modified?
I remember a thread talking about buying the 570 on eBay from a group (name?) that modifies the card so its plug & play.

i have the 570 and it work great with premiere. this should be even better.
for AE it will speed up the raytracer only on CS6 and any other plugins that are CUDA or GPU aware.
but that speed up is huge

Hello, just seeing this, can I ask if this card would work well with a Mac Pro 6 core running 10.7?
Looking for better Premiere & AE performance.
Thank you!

I'm in a position to upgrade my video card (an FX 4800) to something beefier for my PC.

So, what would you recommend for about $600?
