Thanks for the reply, Todd. Since all the FCP timelines are 24 fps, would the 23.986 setting be in the Pro Tools project? He says he's working in 24 fps. But if he were sending a 23.986 file back, would it line up with my original file in AE? Would it not be out of sync there as well?

The deviation seems to be by a factor of 1/1,000, which is exactly the same as the fractional difference between 23.976 and 24.00. So, it seems that your footage is being treated as 23.976fps in one application and 24.000fps in the other.

Subject: [AE] AE / FCP Audio Sync Discrepancy

Greetings to all.

I'm assisting on a film and the audio round trip to Pro Tools isn't
syncing. I'm hoping someone has some insight into the problem. Which
is:

The film is 24 fps. Audio 48k 16 bit out. 48k 24 bit back.
To isolate the problem, we created 3, 5 and 7 minute clips. Each clip
begins with a standard Cinema Tools countdown with a one frame beep at
the 2. Following the countdown is black with a time code. After the
allotted time of the clip, there's another 1 frame 2 with a one frame
beep.
We sent this off to the sound designer who, in Pro Tools, matched the
beeps in his set up, then sent the audio file back.

When I line up the files we sent with the files he sent in After
Effects, they match perfectly.

In FCP, however, they're out of sync -
In the 3 minute clip, the sound guy's beep sounds 5 frames before the
beep at the end
In the 5 minute clip,  the sound guy's  beep sounds 8 frames before the
beep at the end.
In the 7 minute clip,  the sound guy's  beep sounds 11 frames before
the beep at the end.
Not only that, but the waveform appears visually in the right place in
the timeline of the 5 and 7 minute clips, while the actual audio sounds
8 and 11 frames earlier, as noted above.

Does anyone have a clue what can be done to fix this problem? We can't
sync the film until we resolve this issue.

Many thanks in advance.

On our end:
FCP 7.0.3
QT 7.6.6 Pro
AE 11.0.0.378
iMac 10.7.4
