I would agree, that for AE rendering it may be a different story… a lot more network push-pull/cache/etc.
But for C4D which is primarily processor intensive once the farm has served up the file, it gets a bit more attractive… also taking into account tim's point of maintenance/troubleshooting on a barebones PC that uses parts pulled together on the basis of keeping the cost significantly cheaper than the mac mini equivalent. The mac mini will work great right out of the box
And yes, to what dann said… the net render server would probably be better not running on a mac mini… would probably run that off of a mac pro tower

Could be. Your numbers will vary. OTOH, for a person not willing to spend the TIME (which for most people is billable) putting together a bunch of white boxes, one at least knows it will work, and that you're going to be getting a lot of that money back afterwards. Whatever you think of Apple (and I have numerous bones to pick), it's very easy to set them up and keep them running, and they have high residual value. How much would I be paying a sysadmin to keep a bunch of white boxes running? Probably $75K/year. That's a lot of money to me.

I’m pretty convinced this a terrible ROI for AE rendering
