I'd say they retain more value than a junky PC laptop, but half after three years? Check eBay to see if that holds true.
After all the talk I just bought a Mac mini 2012 core i7 16 GB ram, 1tb hdd 2.3 GHz quad core for $899 on eBay. Need to encode a huge amount of footage into prores 4444 on this project and my 2010 laptop ain't cutting it. I can even install win 7 on it and shoot projects over to background render while I work, using mapped network drives. And I can keep adding minis for a render farm if it works.

It's looking like I might need to purchase a laptop in my near future. I've heard tale told that if you buy a Mac, use it for around 3 years and then sell it once that time has passed you will recoup at least half of it's initial value. Does that story have any merit? Those Retina MBP 15" computers sure look really nice.
