I think that people are confusing a couple of things on this thread, so here are two statements of fact:
- After Effects has an internal limit of 2GB for a single image frame held in memory.
- The ray-traced 3D renderer will use all of the VRAM on a graphics card (even more than 2BG, e.g., 6GB).
A detail about that second fact is that the renderer will treat multiple cards as if they each have the lesser amount of VRAM (e.g., both treated as 2GB if one has 2GB and the other has 4GB).
Having large amounts of VRAM can help when you are dealing with large numbers of textures (such as when using an animated environment map), since all of them can be held in VRAM and not have to be swapped in and out.

im pretty sure that even if you have just a 4gb card the raytracer will only be able to use 2GB
