Try the free version of logmein. We use it between macs and PC's. We did a remote Davinci session today across the other side of the continent and almost no delay. I'd start my Resolve project and the remote machine 2000 miles away started less than a half second later watching it on logmein. Amazing!

Teddy I'm catching up on this thread late but I too have had some mac-pc networking weirdness since adding the PC workstation to my otherwise Mac workflow shop a couple of months ago. I've had numerous transfers quit on me. Synchronization software is my friend to make sure the full transfers eventually are completed without starting from scratch each time. BTW when it IS working, I'm getting RAID-to-RAID througput over 100MB/sec at times over my house gigabit network. Average is 75-80MB/sec.

In addition to that...

I'm also very frustrated by VNC issues. Screen sharing is something I do all day every day to administer various functions on different machines. Mac to mac it has always worked flawlessly, including clipboard sharing.

I've been using TightVNC on Windows to connect and run macs but boy is it flaky.
a)the connection just drops frequently. Seems vaguely tied to video refresh.
b)clipboard transfer SOMETIMES works PC to remote mac but it is like 1 out of 5 chance. The reverse NEVER works.
c)Text/cursor/data entry seems more sluggish,

I'd love to get either or both of these things working more smoothly.

Have you tried using SMB instead of AFP for file share?

OK well I think I have it figured out, it's super weird. Turns out if I drag files from the pc to the mac using the pc file explorer in windows 7, the file transfer always quits in the middle, even though the share is still online. However if I drag a file from the windows box onto the mac drive using OSX finder, the transfer completes just fine. I would guess the reverse is true - I'd need to drag the file over in windows explorer if transferring to a windows drive. Had a 70 gb project transfer in 11 minutes between the two RAIDS at around 80 MB/s over the lan cable. Success. Looks like it was a file handling error of some sort. Anyway, gonna set up a static IP between the two boxes and see if that fixes the issue of networking over wifi...

Probably not the solution you're looking for but there was a Mac mini firmware update today that might be worth trying. Sometimes they don't document everything being fixed, although this one was primarily for flickering monitors.

Nah that was the default setting, you were right. Actually much more urgent is that now the network between the computers drops out on every file transfer. Anyone experienced this? They are directly connected using Ethernet cable, and file safer starts fine. Then an error always pops up about a lost connection, even though it still looks ok. Driving me nuts.

Have you tried setting the service order in the Network settings in OSX?  You can click the little gear at the bottom of the list of Ethernet, Airport, etc. and choose "Set Service Order" then drag them around.  If wi-fi is currently above the ethernet connection, you might try putting ethernet first and see if that takes care of it.  ... Only thing is that I think the default would be for Ethernet to be first.  Hm...

Something to try at least,

So I have a mac mini with wifi connected to my PC with a crossover ethernet cable. I have set up file sharing so that I can see the mac drives on my pc and vice versa, I can even use VNC for remote desktop to/from either machine. However the mac mini seems determined to use the wifi for file sharing which maxes out around 5 MB/s for file transfers. When I disable wifi it will use the ethernet cable which is more like 55 MB/s, which is the goal. So I'd like to tell the machine only to use ethernet to connect to my home network for file transfer, and use wifi for internet connection only. When I tried to change the adapter settings (like workgroup) in network prefs on the mac, it wouldn't let me choose workgroup per internet adapter, only for the whole machine. Anyone know how to do this? Or an alternate way to set it up?
