Most particles plugs have a layer emitter function that you can mask as well
as various fin emitter controls. CC Particle Systems II & CC Particle world
called it "Producer" and Particle Playground has a "Canon"  - these are
included with AE I believe. Particular, ParticleIllusion all have fancy
controls for control emitters. I think layer emitters with masks are best
for specific shapes, but points or basic shapes can be done with basic plugs
included in AE.

A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a
progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the
meaning, all that comes later.
