The ACE exam seems to be used as a gatekeeper for instructors as much as anything. Although sometimes it's a way to get an employer to pay for attending a conference - if you leave the event with a certificate or something claiming higher skills, it seems to be justification for the expense of sending an employee somewhere.

There is a case for two separate exams: One for instructors, and one for potential employees. We're trying to steer the AE exam to be more of a qualification for an intermediate level AE job at a studio.
