When I was teaching the occasional class in AE and FCP (and Premiere before FCP was released) between 10 and 15 years ago. The older experienced students in my classes were more interested in real world exercises, problem solving, and practical training than in learning how to push buttons. I often got comments about how local community college courses were staffed by academics rather than production artists, and how it felt lacking. Students really appreciated my real world experience.

Younger students could get focussed on button pushing; I still pushed them towards more real world exercises as much as possible.
