I was remiss in not including the link to the Adobe After Effects Tech Specs page:

There have also been a few threads on this about getting Windows-supported cards to live inside MacPros.

This is an issue many are touchy about, because most older generation Macs came with ATI cards or chips, and therefore are not accelerated, meaning the answer for may has been either get a new video card, or get a new computer. Even high end users such as Stu Maschwitz has complained long and hard about how their slightly older MacBook Pros take forever to render ray-traced 3D, since they have ATI chips. And we have an older generation 17" MacBook with an NVIDIA chip, but it doesn't have enough VRAM. Because of this, most experienced users who have written or recorded videos about ray-traced 3D in CS6 have taken pains to point out this issue.

As a side note, be careful about confusing issues: Global Performance Cache and Ray-traced 3D are not directly linked. GPC is about saving, quickly retrieving, and displaying frames you've already rendered. It doesn't speed up rendering frames that have not already been rendered - which is where RT3D acceleration comes in.

The video card/chip makes all the difference in the world. If it's not on the Adobe approved list of NVIDIA CUDA-accelerated GPUs, then it's going to be many times slower.

Hello Guys,
I am exploring the new ray traced 3D extrusion feature in AE6. I am very excited about it
and was a little irritated because of the enormous render time (over 5hours for only 10s)
I was irritated because after watching Brian Maffitt's 'Global performance cache' tutorial on
I was under the impression that the days of long renders are over.
Am I missing something here?? I am running AE6 on a MacBook Pro Mid 2009, 2.66Ghz,
dual Core with 8 GB RAM
You can watch the movie on:

I am grateful for any suggestion
Thank you
Peter
