Have all the files got alpha? We use ProRes4444 a great deal here but often render with alpha off so we do not have to disable in FCP, where it will cause issues or Davinci where we begin getting partially transparent layers.

Maybe the alpha is being handles differently in 5.5 compared to 6? Just a thought.

I noticed this bug when moving DCP J2K encoding to CS6. AE is creating posterized color bands under certain conditions from a client supplied ProRes 4444 file.

CS5.5 however works just fine. In a 90 minute documentary it only occurred on highlights during dissolves and fades where some banding in color channels was present.

It does not occur if you set AE to 8-bit. Turning on/off MP, disk cache, color management, different output modules etc. had no effect. But going from 16 to 8-bit did.

Appears to me to be a bug – anyone else seen this type of thing?

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.
