Carey if memory serves me right, the core i7 3930k oc'd to 4.7gHz per core gets around 13 flat in the CPU score. It's really an incredible difference at render time over stock speed. And don't forget to grab the gtx680 manufacturer's overclocking tool, you can get another 15-20% out of the graphics card as well.

The new quad core mac mini i7 gets around 6.5, which makes sense. Meaning just two of those in a render farm can equal a pretty significant CPU boost to anyone's workflow, and considering I got mine for around $850, means it's actually got near-PC level price/performance ratio

I also was having network discovery issues. to summarize, when apple switched to their own implementation of SMB they did something weird; they only left something like 5 kb to address file server names whereas it was something like 100kb in OS 10.6 and below. If you have more than a handful of servers, network discovery with windows either won't load, crashes, or glitches out. this is why you can connect directly if you know the IP address. However if you have dynamic IPs this can be a huge pain, as obviously ip address changes. But you can also use the computer's network name, which is what I do. you can also either install the previous smb handling or there's another workaround mentioned here I think.

It's not in huge letters but on the page it's released freeware.

That's a weird problem - don't think 3com switches are likely the issue
although it's not impossible if some kind of TCP port blocking is in place.
It's possible you have some other device on your network (printer, media
streamer etc.) - some of those devices screw with networking in general.

XP had a much simpler and more insecure network stack - thus less prone to
issues.

I've been aware of the FFMPEG thing, but its just not a terribly practical
tool for everyday use. Looked at cinemartin... whats the deal with it ? how
much ? no mention on their site. I saw another ProRes encoder but it was
rather pricey. Cineform is too expensive per seat to consider ( free ver
doesn't do alpha channel last time I looked ) and just not used widely
enough with the people I have to deal with.... and if they spec ProRes HQ
thats what they want.

while workable for final delivery, not sure about everyday work as
intermediates in the process where you are doing updates on something all
day long.

its entirely possible that the 3COM switches I have are the problem. I've
considered that but don't have an option for the moment to change them out
to see if thats the problem.

I went thru OS resintalls, every config imaginable and win 7 just refuses to
network discover correctly. the work around was to do a direct open of the
share via smb/IP and make shortcuts on the desktop. that usually worked. its
when something new shows up you have to track down the IP of the new thing.
Also odd bits - discovery did work for one day, then never again. never
figured out how that happened. win7 does see 2 enet printers and the router.
I never had these problems with XP.

well the problems I've had resulted in huge amounts of wasted time with no
resolution. I spent more time messing around than doing real work.
