h264 is good codec but its not an editing codec and is really a codec used for finishing for say web output but not for broadcast output. I was going to make an explanation but just do a Google search as to why h264 is not an editing codec and there are tons of posts.

We render almost everything ProRes because visual effects are done in After Effects and then returned back to an editing timeline in the same codec for further editing and realtime playback. The round trips are always perfect and the footage that has passed through AE looks identical to the original footage.

ProRes LT is a good codec for offline editing, retaining good image quality at HD frame sizes

ProRes 422 or 422 HQ are very lossless codecs that can be used for finishing, mastering projects.

ProRes 4444 carries an alpha channel in a 10 bit codec with an even higher data rate than ProRes HQ. We use ProRes 4444 for finishing feature films where the source originates as Redcam as it is the most lossless ProRes codec.
