Thanks Carey,

As always, a great, concise explanation that totally makes sense, thank you :-)

Can Ae take advantage of the dual GPU of the GTX 690? I believe Premiere doesn't?

Yes on AE. Not sure on PPro with 690.

And please remind me, why choose i7 over Xeon?

It's a bang-for-buck, or as someone from the UK might say, "value for money" thing.

Xeon's are the best, no denying it.

If you want a dual CPU socket motherboard, you have to go Xeon. You can build a machine with up to 16 cores/32 virtual cores. (that's two CPUs with 8 cores each)

But they are hella expensive.

And they don't overclock.

Or you could spend a whole lot less and get an i7 which has but 6/12 cores, but DOES over clock, and apply some of the savings towards a dedicated Global Performance Cache SSD, more RAM, liquid cooling for the CPU, fast video RAID and get performance approaching 90% of the Xeon monster for about 45-50 percent of the box price. (or less).

90 percent of the performance for 50 percent of the price sounds like a heck of a good deal to me.
