I ended up going with Samsung (BTW, New Egg still has 512GB 830s, and a tasty price on the non-pro 840 ~512GB).

Especially appreciate the tip on IcyBox - no doubt I would have gone crazy receiving the drive then not being able to mount it in the Mac Pro's sleds without excessive fiddling.
