You only get a missing file warning the first time you load a project and it finds something missing.  Once you save the project, the file is marked as missing and you won't get the same warning the next time you open it.  So I would say it's reasonably normal to open a project, not get any warnings about missing footage, but then having lots of missing footage show up with a search.
Don't know about the difference between the 950 and 2626 though…
