there is at least one layer styles that breaks when editing/copying and pasting in AE - I believe it is gradient effects on the bevel edge - if you copy and paste in AE it doesn't take the gradient with it, and so you have to duplicate the layer rather than copying the layer style from one text layer to another - I know make a bug report (i'm powering thru a project now so hopefully when I come up for air)

Note that converting layer styles to effects would lose several features of layer styles. There's a reason that layer styles come where they do in the render order: they function the same as blending modes, taking the layer and the underlying composite as the two inputs.
Several versions ago, After Effects used to use Photoshop layer styles through a conversion to effects, and we got a lot of requests to process them natively as they are now.
If you want a new feature that gives you the option of keeping them as native layer styles or converting them to effects, please submit a feature request:

I would like some kind of functionality that would be "create effects from Layer Styles".
That would allow PhotoShop artists to use Layer Styles and once the PSD is imported the AE user can choose to convert them to effects if needed.

I don't understand why they don't drop Layer styles completely and replace them with Effects. Effects are more powerful and versatile, and photoshop users would find a smoother transition when learning AE.
