| Wanted to say thanks again. Was on a tight deadline and the new place I'm freelancing works 16:9 with a 14:9 cage. Suddenly realised I didn't understand the full ramifications and didn't want to be seen looking the basics up on Google! I still managed to misinterpret the meaning from Chris's reply and embarrassed myself by asserting that 14:9 is about delivering a 4:3 safe picture in a 16:9 frame and that the default centre cut bars in AE are the 14:9 cage to use! Excruciatingly embarrassing to eventually be guided to the directory where the proper 14:9 .psd cages live. Even worse when I scrolled up and the cage was already in the comp but turned off.
All in all, it was a bad day today. On Thursday, March 7, 2013, Chris Zwar wrote:
A quick Google search found a guide from the BBC - you want the diagram on page 7:

FWIW 14x9 is specifically for delivering 16x9 content on a 4x3 monitor, so your delivery will always be 4x3 SD.

For years I was just used to 16:9 and 4:3 title and action but I've never properly looked at what the two new bars of 14:9 mean in a 16:9 comp.
