I have also been annoyed of this behaviour of AE, but i don't have the problem always and haven't been able to isolate what exactly casues AE to sometimes pick the layer and sometimes the mask. I have an idea that it has something to do with the size of the mask or when the layer is scaled, but i can't reproduce it right now. Hopefully, I am not simplifying your problem because it = sounds like you just aren't selecting the mask and instead are getting = just points.=A0 If that's the case, of the many ways, I just click anyw= here on the mask and double click which gets the whole mask.=A0 Or, click o= n mask down in the timeline selects the whole thing.
