paint works only in layer view as opposed to vector paint, one of the 
main complains it was dropped.

As a workaround one can have dual comp views side by side or top bottom 
one with the layer view the other with the main comp locked. As you 
paint on the layer it is updated in the comp view... not as intuitive 
for sure but could work in some situations.
